Cyberinfrastructure: Coming to a Neighbourhood Near You

THE IMPACT OF CYBERSECURITY ON DAY-TO-DAY INTERACTIONS

This session unveils the strength, weaknesses and opportunities that are enabled through state-of-the-art secure cyberinfrastructures. This session examines online identity management, federated identities and network trusted transactions and other emerging issues in an increasingly connected lifestyle.

Session Chair: Jana Makar, Communications Manager, Cybera Inc.
Jana Makar is the Communications Manager for Cybera Inc., a non-profit organization that collaborates with public and private sector partners to develop, integrate and leverage cyberinfrastructure technologies in Alberta. Jana oversees all external communications and marketing for Cybera, including the coordination of Cybera's Cyberinfrastructure Lunch 'n Learn Series and annual Cyberinfrastructure Summit in Banff. In addition to her work with Cybera, she also coordinates overall communications activities for WestGrid,a $60 million project that operates high performance computing, storage, visualization and collaboration infrastructure across western Canada. Prior to Cybera, Jana was Communications Manager with Netera Alliance (which expanded and transitioned into Cybera in July 2007). Before joining Netera Alliance, Jana worked as a journalist for various newspapers across western Canada.

  • Michaela Mezo, Director, Gov-Ed Americas, Juniper Networks
    Michaela Mezo joined Juniper Networks as Director of State and Local Government and Education over three years ago, with a focus on Research and Education. Prior to joining Juniper, Michaela has spent over 15 years in industry and government information technology positions including gov-ed director at Enterasys Networks, project manager for the State of Kansas CJIS implementation, director in the City of Las Vegas IT department, and computer support officer and director of operations in the US Air Force. She is a graduate of Colorado State University.

  • Sean Reynolds, Chief Information Officer, Queen's University
    Sean Reynolds is the Chief Information Officer for Queen’s University. In this role he is responsible for strategy and policy leadership for the Queen’s information technology environment and responsible for the central IT infrastructure and services. Sean was appointed CIO in 2006 after joining Queen’s University in 2003. Sean has worked in higher education information technology in Ontario for over 20 years and has been active in associations of IT professionals including as a founding member of the Canadian University Council of CIO’s (CUCCIO). Sean holds a B.A and M.A. in Economics, both from the University of Guelph.

  • Dr. Rob Simmonds, Chief Technology Officer, WestGrid
    Dr. Rob Simmonds is the director of research for the Grid Research Centre at the University of Calgary and the Chief Technology Officer for WestGrid. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary. Dr. Simmonds holds a PhD from the School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Bath, UK.
